The Problem of Stunting Among Toddlers

The problem of stunting, or impaired growth in children under five, is one of the most serious health challenges in Indonesia. Stunting occurs due to a lack of adequate nutrition, especially in the first 1,000 days of a child’s life, from pregnancy to the age of two. The impact of stunting is very diverse, ranging from problems with stunted physical growth, risk of infectious diseases, to adverse effects on children’s brain and cognitive development.

In Indonesia alone, data released by the Agency for Health Research and Development (Balitbangkes) shows that the prevalence of stunting is still quite high, with more than 27% of toddlers experiencing stunting problems, indicating the need for preventive measures and appropriate interventions in an effort to prevent and overcome this problem.

The PMT is here to ensure the health and growth of children, especially infants and toddlers, by providing additional food that contains sufficient nutrients to support their growth and development. PMT is designed for children above 6 months of age, where they not only receive exclusive breastfeeding, but also additional food to fulfill their nutritional needs.

Based on the recommendations of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, each 100 grams of PMT needs to contain:

  • 450 calories.
  • 14 grams of fat.
  • 9 grams of protein.
  • 71 grams of carbohydrate.
  • 10 types of vitamins (Vitamin A, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, D, E, K, and folic acid).
  • 7 types of minerals (iron, zinc, phosphorus, selenium, and calcium).

  • Traditional diets that are not healthy and nutritious are still maintained by some communities.
  • Lack of variety in the menu given to toddlers can result in a lack of nutrients and vitamins for growth and development.

Anti-Stunting Strategy with PMT Menu Variations

To overcome the problem of stunting in toddlers, it is important to design strategies that pay attention to balanced PMT menu variations. One way is to develop a menu that contains various types of nutritious foods, such as animal and vegetable protein sources, vegetables, fruits, and complex carbohydrates. By paying attention to comprehensive nutritional intake, the PMT menu can provide the nutrients needed for optimal growth of toddlers.
