Deficiency of Vitamin D During Pregnancy in Tropical Countries, A Joint Discussion with Solo Abadi and dr. Yuni Astria Rahardja

Surakarta, PT. Solo Abadi Indonesia – As a manufacturing company engaged in the field of medical instrument, PT. SOLO ABADI INDONESIA is committed to taking part in solving stunting in Indonesia. One of these commitments is manifested in the form of public education about maternal and child health through discussions with experts. On Thursday, December 16, 2021, PT. Solo Abadi Indonesia held an online discussion with the Karya Medika Hospital Pediatrician, dr. Yuni Astria Rahardja with the theme The Role of Mothers in the First 1000 Days of Life to Prevent Stunting.

Through this online discussion, dr. Yuni Astria Rahardja explained that the conception of pregnancy for expectant mothers is very crucial. It will affect the growth and development of the fetus which will even have an impact on the development of children into adulthood. So that PT. Solo Abadi Indonesia and dr. Yuni Astria Rahardja agrees that fulfilling nutrition during pregnancy is an investment for the future of the baby.

PT. Solo Abadi Indonesia is having discussion with dr. Yuni Astria Rahardja

In this discussion, dr. Yuni Astria Rahardja advised that the nutrition that needs to be met in the conception of pregnancy until the gestation period can be started from the consumption of various types of food, especially red meat, seafood and chicken liver. This food diversity is intended to achieve the fulfillment of micro and macro nutrients in pregnant women. In addition, pregnant women need to pay attention to the consumption of blood-added tablets, folic acid and vitamin D. All three have an important role for bone growth in the fetus.

“In Indonesia… many pregnant women is suffer from iron deficiency.. almost 67% of this is dangerous, because babies can be born prematurely and experience anemia, besides folic acid is also important for the development of the baby’s spine, folic acid deficiency will cause the spine will fail to develop…”

Through this discussion, PT. Solo Abadi Indonesia found a surprising fact that Indonesia, which incidentally is a tropical country, is bathed in sunlight all year round, but many pregnant women in Indonesia experience vitamin D deficiency. This was conveyed directly by dr. Yuni Astria Rahardja.

“There is another supplement that is important for pregnant women such as vitamin D and calcium. In general, almost 30% of pregnant women in Indonesia experience vitamin D deficiency, even though we are a tropical country, sunlight is abundant,” he added.

According to research conducted by the US National Library of Medicine, providing adequate vitamin D will prevent children from experiencing stunting. Optimal vitamin D status, which is often assessed by measuring calcifediol which allows calcium absorption and growth to support active vitamin D. Prolonged inadequate vitamin D status impairs transcriptional regulation of bone homeostasis and linear growth, which can result in stunting. Vitamin D deficiency can also cause the recurrence of infectious diseases and disorders related to immunity.

It is important for pregnant women and mothers-to-be to fulfill the intake of various nutrients above, especially vitamin D considering the lifestyle that has changed to tend to be unhealthy. Fulfillment of this vitamin D can be done by consuming additional supplements and consuming lots of sea fish.
