The Large Spreading Caliper measures the distance between two points on a non-flat body surface. Unlike the other three types of calipers, this instrument has a rounded end and tends to be larger. To gain a deeper understanding of this tool, let’s discuss it in the article below.
Why is Large Spreading Caliper so Important in Anthropometry?
First thing first, The Large Spreading Caliper serves as a key tool for measuring human body dimensions. It has round end on each branches. This unique feature enables the caliper to specifically measure the width of non-flat surfaces and the depth of body dimensions.
Secondly, the pronounced curvature of the Large Spreading Caliper actively facilitates its inclusive use for individuals of all kinds. Both of its branches or arms actively connect to a calibrated ruler scale. This active calibration guarantees the validity of the produced scale, having undergone a meticulous alignment process.
Furthermore, the Solid Stainless Steel 304 material imparts higher levels of strength and durability to this tool compared to typical anthropometers.

How to Use Large Spreading Caliper
Using the Large Spreading Caliper is easy. Also, it’s similar to using other calipers like the Sliding Caliper, Small Spreading Caliper, and Branches Measurement Curves. These tools are commonly used in different areas. But, they’re all used to measure things on the human body.
Identify the Landmark or Area to be Measured.
Therefore, the first step in conducting Anthropometric measurements is to identify the landmarks or points on the human body that need measurement. Each landmark has its own measurement method, depending on the shape of the body surface.
Additionally, this tool is generally used to measure the Anterior-Posterior area or the distance between the Anterior (front of the body) and Posterior (back of the body). This wide gap on its branches is designed for this purpose.
Furthermore, the Large Spreading Caliper is specifically employed to measure certain points, including Abdominal Depth, Interscye Distance, Chest Breadth, and Chest Depth.

2. Mark The Area
A. Abdominal Depth
To measure Abdominal Depth, assess the distance from the front to the back in the sagittal plane, representing the depth from the lower part of the body around the navel (umbilicus). Measure two points: one below the navel and the lower back, parallel to the navel. You can mark both points using a pen or marker.
B. Measuring Interscye Distance or Chest Breadth
Transitioning to Chest Breadth measurement, evaluate the maximum horizontal width of the chest at its highest point. Measure at the base of the chest, located near the armpits on each arm. Mark both points using a pen or marker.
C. Measuring Chest Depth
Moving on to Chest Depth measurement, assess the ‘depth’ on the chest curve, located in the middle of the chest (Anterior), with the indentation on the back (Posterior). Mark both points using a pen or marker.
3. Direct the Pointed End to the Landmark.
After determining the reference point, actively guide each end of the Large Spreading Caliper, shaped like a pointed end, to the landmark. Consequently, the ruler will automatically display the results of the measurement taken.
